What to Bring to Camp

This is a hybrid packing list based on the standard T400 Backpacking Equipment List, the Camp Melita Island list, and Wise Old Scout experience.

Personal Essentials

  • Hiking backpack (if you don't have one, the troop has loaners)

  • Uniform shirt, neckerchief, and slide (plus OA sash if you are a member of OA)

  • T-shirts (red T400 shirt plus others as needed)

  • Pants

  • Shorts

  • Swimsuit

  • Underwear

  • Socks (several pairs)

  • Jacket/sweatshirt

  • Raincoat/poncho

  • Hiking boots

  • Light shoes

  • Large towel (beach towel)

  • Washcloth

  • Soap/shampoo

  • Deodorant

  • Toothbrush + toothpaste

  • Sunglasses

  • Hat

  • Sunscreen + lip balm with SPF

  • Insect repellent

  • Tent (required - there are no BSA tents at Melita!)*

  • Sleeping bag

  • Foam pad

  • Water bottle/container

  • Flashlight or headlamp + spare batteries

  • Wristwatch

  • Personal first aid kit with moleskin

  • Pocket knife

  • Notepad and pencils

  • Spending money for activities & Trading Post

  • Scout Handbook

  • Merit Badge prerequisites (work finished before camp if you want to finish it at camp) for the following badges:

    • Swimming (read and bring pamphlet)

    • Lifesaving (read and bring pamphlet)

    • Environmental Science (3, 4, 5)

    • Orienteering (7, 9)

    • Geocaching (7, 8, 9)

    • Camping (8c, 8d, 9a-c)

    • Cooking (4a, 6a, 7)

Optional-Recommended

  • Clothes hanger for uniform shirt

  • Laundry bag

  • Hand towel

  • GPS

  • Fishing gear (for recreational fishing; camp provides for merit badge)**

  • Camera (this is an allowed electronic item; cannot also be a phone)

  • Sharpening stone

  • Matches

  • Sewing kit

  • Twine or light rope

  • Swim goggles

  • Sealable gallon plastic bag for trash in tent

  • Camp stool

  • Merit badge pamphlets ($4.49 at Scout Shop)

*Scouts below First Class rank must have a tent buddy. We will group into patrols, so try to buddy with someone from your patrol.

**Scouts age 12+ will need a $10 Tribal fishing license if they are taking Fishing or Fly Fishing, or wish to fish recreationally. We will purchase these at Walmart in Polson en route to camp.

***If you want a Scoutmaster to keep your son's return-trip meal money, please seal it in an envelope with his name on it.

Money Needed

    • Motorboating = $12

    • Water Sports = $12

    • Rifle = $8

    • Archery = $8
